Whichever function your green space is required to serve, based on a sound horticultural knowledge of the plants themselves, I choose the right plants for the right places to achieve your desired effect.

With over 25 years experience, I understand which plants work well in the variable environments and conditions that the South East has to offer.

I offer practical and attractive solutions for small urban gardens and cost-effective choices for those whose larger country garden has just become too labour intensive.

Vegetables

I have had an increasing demand from customers to construct raised beds for vegetable growing and to advise on planting techniques especially for gardeners with mobility issues.

If your soil is heavy and poorly drained and you want to save your back, raised beds are really worth considering. 

They drain well and will warm up much faster in the spring, giving you earlier crops. They also allow you to choose the right soil for a particular plant you might not be able to grow in your native soil, for example ericaceous (lime-hating) plants. 

Hedging

We understand that there are numerous hedge and shrubs species out there, which makes choosing the right one very challenging. There are also various factors to consider when selecting the right species, such as soil condition, aspect and available space. We can make choosing the right shrub for your outdoor space easier.

Evergreens make fine hedges providing shelter or privacy all year round but require pruning annually, ideally twice a year. We often plant low hedging to separate lawns, path and drives from bedding areas.

Deciduous plants also make excellent hedges and what you may lack with privacy in Winter you more than make up for with a stunning range of Summer leaf shape and fruits and berries for wildlife. Prune back in late summer.

We try to plant up most of our bare root hedges between November and March in the dormant season and then plant well developed rootball hedging from March to May. Root ball plants are established field grown plants, left to develop for a number of years to provide hedging with good height and foliage structure.

Lawns

There’s no mistaking a luxury lawn. Its velvet look is brought about by good quality, fine-leaved compact grasses – mainly Bents and Fescues.

But do you really want (or need) a lawn like a bowling green?

Most of us are content with a healthy patch of lawn with few weeds and even fewer bare patches; a utility turf that can stand up to children, dogs, cycles and heavy compaction.

I have lawned areas from 25m² to 350m². I understand the essential preparation required in both scenarios, paying particular attention to soil preparation and amelioration so that your grass grows as you expect.

I’ll let you know which nutrients to add when and, crucially, in what measure. All of the turf we supply comes from two family firms in Bedfordshire and Suffolk. Combined, they have 100 years of experience in producing and cutting turf for the landscape industry.
